NEW YEAR'S REVOLUTION
15.01.2006

having recovered from our new year celebrations, we are now in a position to write the first news post of 2007, the year we have modestly dubbed 'the year of motive'. lots of stuff has, and is happening right now, some of which we can't mention yet, but there's still plenty to talk about.

manatees have scored rave reviews in uncut (4/5) and plan b (check the press section to read the words), and are gearing up for their february tour (check the live page or myspace for dates). the band will start recording again in february.

the other big m, Mt., made it into the top 50 instrumental releases of 2006 on silent ballet (http://www.thesilentballet.com/tsbt/2006/1.html), and have just made it through to the second round of the same sites battle of the bands feature, so if you would like to see them go further, head over to the site and vote (http://www.thesilentballet.com/battleofthebands1.html). Mt. are also back in the studio at the end of february, and are currently laying plans for their most ambitious record to date...

loewry have just released a new book entitled 'print and production finishes for cd and dvd packaging' which catalogues "ground breaking packaging from a production perspective", and features no less than 5 motivesounds releases within its pages, an achievement of which we are very proud indeed. you can buy the book from many places including direct from the publisher (http://www.rotovision.com), amazon and many o' good book shop.

more to follow soon...

ICH HEIßE MOTIVESOUNDS
09.12.2006
after only being out for a month, 'untitled' by manatees has made it into rocksound's top 75 albums of 2006, beating the likes of fightstar, evanescence, lil chris and secondtolast. it's in this month's issue, out now, and tucked away at the side, chris hidden included capulet's album in his top 10. a great result all round.

had he waited, perhaps the ebay seller who recently got £16 for a sealed manatees promo pack (consisting of a cd and two sheets of a4) he’d put up for auction would have got more. whilst we find this faintly ridiculous (not to mention a little rude, given that he obviously didn’t listen to it), we also take a bizarre pride that it would fetch that much. if you want you’re own promo pack, we’d be happy to make one up for you now and charge only £15…a bargain. alternatively, just head to the motive store and grab a fully packaged album for just £8.99.

those reading from germany and holland can also now head to their local music emporiums to buy a copy of 'untitled', as the album (along with Mt.s ‘lethologica’) has just been released.

SWEET HOME...
20.11.2006

manatees post november 2006 tour

after two long, hard weeks on the road making new friends and meeting old ones, getting clamped and fined, tasting the culinary delights of liz and rogers hospitality and causing record new cases of epilepsy with their light show, manatees have made it home. there are five tapes full of footage which we'll be going through, to try and do something with the hours of annoying noises and pumps...and, err, mature political debate. if you missed them this time, fear not, they shall touring again in early 2007, and will no doubt have found away to further assault the senses with their juggernaut of sound.

DESIGNER LABEL...
01.11.2006

when we began this endeavor, the idea was to fight against the dwindling interest in actually owning a cd, the excitment of holding a labour of love in your hands (and not just worrying about how much space is left on your ipod's hard drive). to this end we have sought to work with musicians and designers for whom this same vision holds true, and who go about their creations with an equal passion.

in order to represent this better on our site, we are adding a designer roster to sit alongside the bands roster. we will be adding one designer a day over the next fortnight, and the first one is up now, so if you, like us, take as much interest in what surrounds your cd as whats on it, click the roster link above to learn more.

EVERY CLOUD...
13.10.2006

manatees

manatees are featured in this month's rocksound magazine with the untitled debut being described as 'one of the most ambitious records of 06' they also made it onto darren taylor's most played (decks of death). and if that wasn't enough, part iiiii of 'the forever ending jitter quest of slowhand chuckle walker: an introduction to the manatee' also made it on the cover cd alongside converge, botch and isis to name but a few. it's issue 90 and available to buy now.
the album in question released on monday 6th november and is available to pre-order. click on shop to have a peep.

after a costly missed flight, delays and security searches, it wasn't all bad for skoud this week as 'system 20' got played on xfm london as part of nick luscombe's 'flo motion' show (www.xfm.co.uk/flomotion).

MOUNTAINEERING & DIGITAL DOWNLOADS
04.10.2006

motive gramps modelling Mt. tee

Mt.’s debut album, ‘lethologica’ is finally released. the album has been gathering a lot of praise in reviews for dragging post rock kicking and screaming out of its miserablelist introspection whilst still retaining the power to move. click on the shop link above if you would like to purchase one (go on, you know your fingers itch). if you feel that you are not dressed in the correct attire to absorb the music, you can now buy one of two ‘natty’ Mt. t-shirt designs from the store in varying sizes.

in other news, we have signed a deal with our distributor, shellshock (www.shellshock.co.uk) which will make our rosters music available from pretty much every single download site, and store kiosk across many, many countries. so if a release has sold out, or if you really aren’t interested in owning the artwork, you can go and fill your ipod to your hearts content.

the motivesounds compilation from 2003 which started this whole sordid affair has now sold out. we are sad, but a little less poor.

skoud has uncovered an old creation from within the folders of anna kournikova and tatu pictures of his beat making machine aka a laptop. click on media to download 'lugripak' now. skoud is also making a one-off appearance this saturday at the brickyard, carlisle (uk), so if you're anywhere near and fancy some phat russo-swedo electronica beats, this is the place to be. also playing are Mt. and hooray! say the roses.

EBAY A CALLIN'
07.09.2006

motive gramps modelling skoud tee

skoud's gorgeous ep is now out and available to buy to all and sundrie, and we would urge you to do so, from our completely impartial perch. each of the 330 limited edition cd's comes hand signed by skoud, and individually stamped and numbered. the packaging is based on skoud's own russian passport, and the music is contained on a 3” cd (just like the ones you used to find in cereal packets). skoud tee’s are also now available, and make the perfect outfit whilst listening to the ep (as demonstrated by the motive gramps).

you should also head over to www.youtube.com/motivesoundsrecs to watch the skoud and capulet videos now up, they are worth the trip.

the Mt./upcdowncleftcrightcabcandstart split single is now available to buy from the motive shop, you get a track from each band and artwork by freddie ost. these were originally only available on the tour, but now the world is welcome to get theirs. as far as we know these are also strictly limited, only 300 copies were pressed by tap’n’tin records, and we are not aware of any plans for a repress. get one while you can.

PRE-ORDER 'LOST SYSTEMS'

myspace along with 'iii' from the forthcoming manatees album.

NUMBERS...
16.08.2006
Mt. in a van

after 12 days on the road, 1 sold out night in london, an 8 piece drum finale in kent and 4 yi yi attended gigs Mt. can finally get back to their sudoku puzzles and early nights. plans are already being made for the next tour in 2007 so keep em peeled. if you can't wait that long you can still get your fix of Mt. when their debut album is released in october. 'lethologica' is available to pre-order now, head over to the shop to do so.

there's soon to be a new addition to the motivesounds releases. skoud has given birth to a very limited ep. 'lost systems' is a collection of the tracks that wouldn’t fit onto the 'systems and drafts' lp but were too good to leave on skoud's hard drive. this is an extremely limited release of only 330 copies, packaged in a passport that resembles skoud’s own, all individually numbered, stamped and then signed by skoud himself. there will be no reprints of this ep.
if you caught skoud on his recent uk tour, you will have heard some of the tracks included on this 3” cd, this is your chance to own them. ‘lost systems’ will only be available to buy from motivesounds and warpmart on monday 28th august. get on the mailinglist (below) to find out how to pre-order from our store.
the russian is also doing a one-off gig in carlisle on october 7th. see the live page for a little more info.

FORCE MAJEURE
01.08.2006

today is the start of the tour force majeure, making its way across our fair isle. if you didn't already know, Mt. and upcdowncleftcrightcabcandstart have got together for a twelve date tour around the uk (you will have seen the poster on your way into the site, and you can check the dates on the live page).

anyone turning up at these shows will be able to get their hands on a limited edition split single printed for the tour. a two track single with cover art by freddie ost (the same guy who did the tour poster), it features 'too many escape darwins attention' by Mt. from their forthcoming album, 'lethologica',
and the previously unreleased 'this is where i cried for help' from upcdownc.

Mt. will also be selling t-shirts for the lucky few who are cool enough to wear one...

IN ONE EAR, OUT THE OTHER

capulet in a boat - july 2006 UK tour

after two weeks on the road, the post rock party came clatering to a halt in preston on the 16 july. thanks to everyone who made it to a show, and aplologies to those of you who missed the london show due to the moved date. if you still can't get enough of the shakespearian quartet, head over to the media page and download the video for 'no time spoke the clocks'. directed by randolph booth over 3 months, it is well worth watching, easily as epic as the song itself. if for some reason your thirst for the fun boy four is still not quenched, head to the press section to be impressed by the creative review article, now scanned in.

as one tour ends, another is limbering up, as Mt. prepare to hit the road with upcdowncleftcrightcabcandstart in less than two weeks. we know you'll already have it in your diaries, but now is the time to suggest your friends also put it in theirs.

and finally, those of you astute enough to have subscribed to the mailinglist will soon be hearing how you can get your hands on a very limited release before anyone else....keep em peeled.

THE BEAST IS RELEASED
03.07.2006

july 2006 - capulet tour poster

'the world is a tragic place, but there is grace all around us, so attend to the grace’ is capulet’s debut album released today. following on from two previous self released eps, this is a heart-stopping consolidation of their best work to date, and brand new material. by turns structurally playful, and aurally intense, the bands music is unpredictable and seething with melodic hooks, and rollercoaster progression. recorded in oldwell studios by johannes rowlinson, and packaged in a new design by the increasingly well known barry smith, this lp represents one of our strongest releases to date.
it's available from all good record stores and many online retailers, including this one; www.simbioticstore.com/motivesounds.

the post rock party also hit the road on their two week uk tour supporting the release starting tonight with glasgow.

03 jul - glasgow, 13th note
04 jul - edinburgh, henry's
05 jul - newcastle, head of steam
06 jul - carlisle, the brickyard
07 jul - london, the water rats theatre
10 jul - birmingham, scruffy murphys
11 jul - chester, off the wall
12 jul - manchester, retro bar
13 jul - lancaster, keystones

WE WON'T HAVE SECRETS IN THIS HOUSE

wickerman festival 2006

The album will, of course, be available directly from their clammy hands during this time.

wickerman festival tickets are selling fast. the festival which takes place on july 21st and 22nd in scotland is a celebration of cult and off the wall music that climaxes in the burning of a giant willow and straw effigy. let airplanes circle overhead are playing the solus tent curated by skiddle.com along with the aliens and f.o machete. for full info and tickets visit www.skiddle.com/wickertix

mt.’s debut album ‘lethologica’ has slipped slightly due to unavoidable circumstances, and is now scheduled for release in october. mt. will be touring the uk in august, so again, check the live page for dates. there’s one other exciting announcement, but we’re not allowed to talk about it yet, watch this space…

manatees have been hard at work in the studio too, and are in the final stages of recording their album, the mixing already started. this lp will also be out in october, if all things going to plan, and wewill pack them off on tour around this time. the untitled album is shaping up to be the heaviest thing motive has put out yet…

which leaves a couple of empty looking months between capulet and the rest, right? not so, there is one more release tucked nicely between everything else, but those of you who have subscribed to the mailing list will learn what it is, and be able to buy it, first. hopefully we will be able to enlighten you within the next few weeks…
